Progressive Learning @ Home
The program is designed to provide a holistic, structured environment for a family to be directly involved in their children's educational development.
Progressive Learning provides the framework, does the heavy lifting, under the professional supervision and participation of an Academic Coach (teacher mentor) for the child and a Parent Coach for Parental support.
The “Parent” is either a Parent, or a designated member of the family (e.g.older sibling), or extended family.
Parent's Role
The Parent commits to be with the student in a comfortable, private and quiet environment for learning in the family home. The goal is for this activity to become a welcome retreat shut off from the rest of the world. Both student and Parent should feel that they are developing a special connection from this positive shared experience.
The Parent's job is to assist when possible, but for the most part be in the background. They can read, knit, write, use a computer, etc. However, the Parent needs to "be there" for the student, to be attentive, and responsive to any questions or comments. This means putting down the book, pausing the email, etc., whenever called upon.
A preset schedule determined between Parent and Student must be respected and only changed in the event of an emergency. By keeping this “together time” as an almost sacred commitment to this collaboration, it will instill a sense of discipline, add value to the program and model how a regular focused routine can bring about great results.
The program is composed of 10 sessions, with a minimum of 1 session per week. The number of sessions and session length will be determined at the beginning of the program by the family to be either 60 or 90 minutes. What works best for your family is what is important and the key to your family’s positive experience with the program.
The Parent will receive regular support phone calls from the Parent coach. These calls are designed to address any challenges for the family in creating the time, and the atmosphere required, conflict with other household demands including other siblings, etc. Parent Coaches quickly become part of your family’s team and help you evaluate your child’s progress.
