It is my belief that once a person spends the time and effort to process the difficult or harmful events in their life, they will find a reduction in their stress. There are times when core beliefs get in the way of a satisfying life. For example, if you believe (it may not be a fully conscious thought) that bad things don't happen to good people, and something horrible has just happened to you, it may be easy to think that there is something wrong with you. But through examining your underlying beliefs, you may realize that bad things do happen to good people. Just that one change of perception may begin a process of healing that leads to a more satisfying life. There are thousands of similar examples, where a change of perception can lead to a more enjoyable life. Some of our beliefs lead to a more adaptive and enjoyable life, while others causes stress and heartache. But to the person who is dealing with the stress, it just looks like that is how life is. Therefore, they often have little hope of it getting any better. The events of our life since we were born, throughout childhood, and into adulthood inform all of our perceptions. Some of our unique way of viewing the world makes certain events easier for us to handle; and some of it makes events more difficult than it needs to be. That is one reason why some people can handle rejection and disappointment better than others, for example.
