  • Description:
  • The year long renovation in 2004 of these two downtown Hot Springs buildings that now house the unique different Bright Leaf Junction Hotel and Restaurant, resulted in a remarkable transformation of the look and feel of this rural downtown. What once was, and remained for 35 years, a gaping black hole in the block of buildings connected to the Town Hall, is now a sparkling bright and cheery spot welcoming visitors to this quaint mountain town. The building that now houses the restaurant/bar and three guest rooms above was listed (pre-renovation) on the property tax roles as a "shed". It was originally built circa 1880 and served as a haberdashery (mens accessory store-hats, canes, handkerchiefs, etc.) The building had been damaged by fire and the rear of the structure had collapsed into a heap of bricks then, roofless, remained exposed to the elements for 35 years. The refurbishment was able to preserve the facade of the building, including the cast iron frieze, iron columns and aging brick, as well as the front portion of the buildings sides walls contibuting to the charming interior with exposed brick and the original plaster walls. The building now contains 60 seats for dining, a two story custom fireplace, swirled copper and dyed concrete bar, a 25 foot atrium with loft and catwalk for lounge and restaurant seating as well as a modern open kitchen design. The upstairs of the second building was built as a hotel in 1929 and eventually served as a boarding house into the mid-70's and contained only 2 bathrooms to serve the guests/residents. Now there are 15 guest rooms all with private baths and decorated beautiful in bright colors and modern fixtures. The renovation of this hotel building preserved the original architectural details: heart pine floors, 18 skylights, tin ceiling and cornice work, plaster and lathe walls and transoms. The final result exudes tremendous character with its unique and bright modern decor, mid-century danish modern antiques and plush fabrics as well as providing amenities such as Jacuzzi tubs, wireless internet, satellite TV and phone service. The town contains the only naturally occuring hot springs in the state of North CarolinsThe French Broad River, The Appalachian Trail, The Paint Rock Rail Road Line and Scenic Highways all converge on this little town and have brought a diversity of visitors to the area for centuries. Now it is a mecca for whitewater rafters, trail hikers, bicycle enthusiasts, motorcyclists, railroad fans, fly fisherman and those just seekinging to soak in the rejuvenating hot spring waters. All of these adventurous offerings aside, the town is most popular for Romantic Getaways and most recently a top choice for Destination Weddings. The hotel is open year round and more information and pictures can be found at www.brightleafjunction.com which offers online reservation bookings.
