Description: This is the largest newspaper in Virginia and one of the most award winning. It has been recognized repeatedly as one of the best-designed papers in the world, and its writers and photographers annually win top places in Associated Press competitions. The paper has also won three Pulitzer Prizes in its history. Two go back to the days of segregation when the editorial page took then-unpopular stands against lynching and the closing of public schools to avoid integration. A third Pulitzer Prize was awarded in 1985 for an investigation into the spending of public money by a city official in Chesapeake. The newspaper has offices in Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, and Suffolk and produces local news inserts for each of the five Southside cities. It also circulates on the Eastern Shore of Virginia and into northeastern North Carolina, where it has an office as well. It is locally owned and was briefly put up for sale but pulled back.
