Description: The Tri-State Defender, a weekly newspaper with a circulation of about 36,500, was formerly a part of the crusading Sengstacke newspaper chain, based in Chicago. The Defender was known as a fearless force at the peak of the black civil rights era and served, along with black churches in Memphis, as one of the rallying points for the civil rights struggle. Those days are mostly in the past, but the Defender still has a powerful, civil rights–oriented voice in other issues, from local schools to welfare reform. The paper in recent years has expanded its offerings of society and lifestyle news and information as it seeks to become both an urban community paper while maintaining its political edge. The newspaper is 75 cents a copy on the newsstand and $30 for a year’s subscription.
