Description: Every week Memphians flock to nearby news racks or to one of the distinctive green dispensers around town for the latest issue of the Memphis Flyer. The attraction: the lively coverage of what’s happening around town as well as stories that often are the most talked about in town. The Flyer is a weekly free paper that tries to fill a number of niches, from liberal alternative news source to exhaustive listings of restaurants, nightlife, and live music. It is part of Contemporary Media, Inc., which also publishes Memphis magazine. The Flyer does some investigative reporting but specializes more in long, detailed explanatory articles for the cover and lots of short tidbits throughout the paper. Notable for his political coverage is reporter Jackson Baker. Because its advertising rates are favorable to small retailers, many people find the assortment of ads for small local business at least as valuable as the writing itself. The Flyer also does a brisk business in classified and personal ads; though most of the ads are middle of the road, some of them are the most risqué in Memphis. Depending on your neighborhood the new issue is available on Wednesday or Thursday. The Flyer has a circulation of about 59,000 and readership of about 225,000. If you’d like the weekly delivered to your home, a one-year subscription is $100.
