Description: Memphis Business Journal (MBJ) is a weekly newspaper with paid circulation of about 9,500 and readership of about 60,000. It is published every Friday. A must-read for the business community, this well-respected weekly is often first to publish many important stories. The paper’s primary focus is covering local business: real estate, economic development, health care, education, tourism, and other segments of the economy. MBJ was started in 1970 by journalists Deborah and Barney Dubois plus a group of local executives, and it immediately established its reputation as an aggressive newspaper that breaks a surprising number of local news stories. At present MBJ is one of about 40 city business newspapers owned and operated by American City Business Journals, headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina. In addition to its news coverage, MBJ also features weekly special sections that zero in on a particular industry plus exhaustive listings of tax liens, judgments, commercial property transfers, and other news of record. MBJ’s annual Book of Lists, published the last week of the year, is a valuable resource, and its Web site provides daily breaking news in addition to articles from the print edition of the newspaper. The cost is $1.75 a copy on the newsstand and $82.00 for a year’s subscription.
