Description: This nonprofit, faith-based continuing-care retirement community that sprawls across a 251-acre campus situated less than 15 miles east of Gettysburg has more than 900 residents who call the place home. The Brethren Home Community began in 1908, and today it includes apartments, cottages, and single homes in addition to its assisted-living center and health-care center. Individual retirement homes come in three different floor plans ranging from 1,782 to 2,041 square feet with 9-foot ceilings, two bedrooms, two baths, a two-car garage, and walk-in closets. Cross Keys Village features more than 320 cottages in 21 different models, from roomy one-bedroom to large two-bedroom models with a garage. One- and two-bedroom apartments are found at Harmony Ridge, and most feature a private patio or balcony in addition to modern conveniences. If you prefer not to cook your own meals, you can dine at the Campus Inn Restaurant, which is open seven days a week. The campus also boasts a fitness center, a church, a community center, banking services, a gift shop, scheduled campus transportation, and walkways that let you take in the rural setting at a leisurely pace. The assisted-living center of the Brethren Home Community is a licensed personal-care facility that allows you to continue your independent lifestyle while knowing personal assistance is available from the staff 24 hours a day. Meals are served restaurant style in the dining room three times a day, and a kitchenette is located on each floor of the center. Each floor also has a spacious living room where you can relax, and activities that provide social interaction with other residents take place every day. Medical care is offered at the health care center, which offers long-term and short-term nursing care as well as respite care. Short-term medical treatment or rehabilitation that’s needed after a hospital stay is given at the Cross Keys Subacute Center, and the health-care center also offers special-care nursing for clients with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related disorders. Adult day-care services are part of the Brethren Home Community, and day care is provided to those in the surrounding community as well as to campus residents. The day care is designed for adults who need some degree of daily supervision, and it’s open to persons at least 18 years old who are physically challenged and/or cognitively impaired. Services at the day care include a hot meal and a wide range of activities, such as cooking, field trips, arts and crafts, music, gardening, and pet visits. Personal-care services, such as bathing and hair care, are also provided. A noon meal is served as well as morning and afternoon snacks. The cost for the adult day care is $42.00 for a full day and $32.50 for a half day. The noon meal costs $4.00. More information on the adult day care may be obtained by calling (717) 624-5955.
