1. Ascot House Bed & Breakfast

City: Marietta, PA
Category: Accommodations
Telephone: (717) 426-2518
Address: 219 W. Market St.
Insider Pick:

Description: Marietta is a little bit off the beaten track, but this circa-1800 Georgian home is a find. Yes, it’s partly the antique-filled decor of the warm and welcoming common room and 5 guest rooms, most with fireplace and Jacuzzi. But just as important is the charm of owner Wendy Codd, who will cook you a bountiful breakfast in the morning and authentic British tea in the afternoon. Dogs are welcome (pet-sitting is available for $10 per hour).

2. Olde Fogie Farm

City: Marietta, PA
Category: Accommodations
Telephone: (717) 426-3992, (877) 653-3644
Address: 106 Stackstown Rd.
Insider Pick:

Description: That’s “olde” as in quaint, not ancient, joke the good-natured owners of this organic (been that way for about 40 years), free-range farm, who, by the way, are named Tom and Biz Fogie. This is truly a feel-good place, as much because of the Fogies as for their comfy accommodations and gorgeous garden (including one that is alive with butterflies). Two types of accommodations are available here: traditional bed-and-breakfast rooms and family efficiency suites (cook your own breakfast—you’re welcome to gather your own eggs). Chore participation is optional, but I say, get up and do it.

3. Josephine’s Restaurant

City: Marietta, PA
Category: Restaurants
Telephone: (717) 426-2003
Address: 324 W. Market St.
Insider Pick:

Description: Exposed beams and walls made of stucco-stacked log walls provide 18th-century ambience, but chef/owner Daniel LaBoon’s French-inspired menu is anything but old-fashioned. I can never resist the short ribs, but I’m told there are other good things on the menu as well. Save room for the homemade ice cream.

4. George’s Woodcrafts, Inc.

City: Marietta, PA
Category: Shopping
Telephone: (717) 426-1004, (800) 799-1685
Address: 9 Reichs Church Rd.

Description: Even the drawer bottoms and cabinet backs of these artisan home and office furnishings are made from solid, air-and-kiln-dried hardwood: no skimping, no shortcuts. And each piece of furniture is signed by the craftsman who made it. The rocking chairs are divine.
