Description: The Cashtown Inn was built around 1797 as the first stagecoach stop west of Gettysburg. It’s located 8 miles west of town on Old Route 30, and in 1863 the inn was used by Gen. A. P. Hill as his Confederate headquarters while the 22,000 men of his Third Corp camped throughout town. If you think the inn looks familiar, it very well might. It has appeared in the movie Gettysburg and in the Mark Nesbit book and video Ghosts of Gettysburg. It’s also been featured on the cover of Blue and Gray magazine, in the video Haunted Gettysburg, and in the book Haunts of the Cashtown Inn. Civil War artist Dale Gallon also depicts the inn in his limited-edition print Serious Work Ahead, which shows Confederate generals Lee and Hill meeting on July 1, 1863. This is the same scene created by artist Mort Künstler in his 1998 painting Distant Thunder. The inn, along with its fine-dining restaurant and tavern, is decorated with Civil War art and antiques, and the guest rooms are original to the 1797 house. The most famous guest room is the Heth Room, with its antique double bed. The other three rooms have queen-size beds, and you can choose between an iron bed in the Pettigrew Room, a four-poster bed and a view of South Mountain in the Imboden Room, or a lace canopy and a view of the village of Cashtown in the A. P. Hill Room. The inn has three two-room suites in addition to its four guest rooms. All accommodations come with private bath, clock radio, and air-conditioning. The General Lee Suite is located under the eaves on the inn’s third floor. Outfitted with a TV, VCR, refrigerator, and couch in the living room, this suite has a king-size bed, and it’s where Sam Elliott stayed while filming the movie Gettysburg. The Pender and Anderson Suites are identical and next door to each other at the rear of the inn. You’ll be very comfortable in either suite, with a private entrance and porch, a queen-size four-poster bed in the bedroom, and a couch in the living room. Groups of four to eight can rent both suites for a private retreat. Children age 12 and older are welcome in the rooms, but those younger are welcome only in the Pender and Anderson Suites. Breakfast is included with your stay, and it’s a fully served meal on the weekends and a continental breakfast on weekdays. For dining choices during the day, lighter fare and a more casual ambience are served up in the tavern, while the formal dining room is the perfect spot for an elegant evening. For a full description of the inn’s culinary delights, see the Restaurants chapter. Guests are welcome to walk off their meals in the inn’s gardens, where the chefs pick the fresh herbs used in the restaurant’s dishes. Many a guest has found relaxation by sitting and swinging on the front porch while admiring the beautiful vistas around the inn. For guests who wish to have a weekend of activity, the inn offers many packages and theme weekends, such as murder-mystery weekends and ghost-hunters weekends.
