Description: For 25 years, the University of New Mexico, based in Albuquerque, has offered graduate and upper-division programs in Santa Fe. UNM began its program at the request of the governor to fill the educational advancement needs of state employees. Until it found a home on the SFCC campus, UNM rented space from various agencies. Beginning with 50 students, UNM–Santa Fe enrollment now is near 1,000 annually.Students at UNM–Santa Fe tend to be working professionals returning to school to complete their bachelor’s degree or study toward their master’s. For student convenience, most courses are scheduled in the evening. Bachelor’s degree programs include nursing, speech and hearing, and University Studies, a nontraditional program in which students design their own course of study. Master’s-degree programs include counseling, communications, and educational administration. In addition, UNM offers upper-level and graduate classes in multicultural education, Southwestern studies, and more. About half the courses are taught via television from the main campus in Albuquerque. Santa Fe students use the telephone to call in questions or answers. The UNM office at Santa Fe Community College can provide information to students about main campus programs. They have applications, financial aid information, and UNM’s undergraduate catalog and graduate bulletins.
