Description: La Posada is Santa Fe’s only hotel with a resident ghost. Employees and guests alike swear they’ve seen, or at least felt, the presence of the long-deceased Julia Schuster Staab, who died on May 15, 1896. Most encounters have occurred in what was Julia’s upstairs bedroom, formerly known simply as Room 256, now called the Victorian Suite and renumbered as room 100. Originally from Germany, Julia married wealthy Santa Fe merchant Abraham Staab, who in 1882 built his young wife the Victorian mansion that is now the main building of La Posada. Although Julia is not the only ghost in Santa Fe, she’s certainly the most famous. But her presence, at least in principle, doesn’t seem to scare away either tourists or locals, who come in droves to this lovely, serene hotel set among six acres of lawns, trees, and flowers.Renovated in 2008, many of La Posada’s 127 faux- and real-adobe rooms and 30 suites come with kiva fireplaces and patios overlooking the rambling grounds that are a favorite setting for weddings. The romantic Victorian bar, the Staab House Lounge, is popular among locals, as is Fuego Restaurant, which offers four-star dining emphasizing seasonal, locally sourced foods. La Posada’s well-regarded spa offers Indigenous-inspired massage, facials, and adobe mud wraps. NOTE: there’s a $30 daily room fee for use of resort amenities such as WiFi, shuttle, valet parking, and wine tastings.
