Description: Located just east of downtown Minneapolis, near the University of Minnesota, Augsburg College is the Twin Cities’ Evangelical Lutheran institution of higher learning. The college provides a largely secular education, though it retains its affiliation. The college, founded in Marshall, Wisconsin, in 1869, relocated to Minneapolis in 1872. Since then Augsburg has grown in scope and enrollment, with annual enrollments of nearly 4,000 students. Professors at Augsburg concentrate on teaching rather than research, and the average class size is only 15. Another asset is the plentiful multicultural support programs, ranging from Pan-African and Pan-Asian to Hispanic/Latino student services. Augsburg offers programs in most disciplines. Augsburg also offers majors not found at some other institutions of higher learning, e.g., Nordic Area Studies, which reflects the heritage of the region and the continuing influence of Scandinavian Lutheran culture. Activities abound at Augsburg and enrich students’ educational experience. With nine male and eight female intercollegiate sports, the “Auggies” are members of Division III of the NCAA in the MIAC (Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Association). More than 50 clubs and organizations are on campus, including forensics, cheerleading, and the student newspaper.
