Description: City Paper was started in 1977 by two students at Johns Hopkins University. Their goal was to create a liberal alternative to the mainstream papers in Baltimore, and they were successful. Successful enough that the paper was bought by Times-Shamrock Communications in 1987. The paper is currently owned by the Scranton Times. City Paper still keeps a young voice, but it speaks honestly to the whole city and is the place Baltimoreans go to learn what’s happening this week. Its calendar of events is pages and pages in length and covers everything from arts galas to movie times to yard sales. The paper prides itself on its in-depth investigative reporting and its arts coverage. The personals listings are also extensive. The paper has a circulation of 91,000 and is distributed free at more than 1,800 locations in the metropolitan area. New editions come out Wednesdays; look for copies in the bright yellow boxes, at some corner stores, and at magazine stands. Subscriptions for home delivery are $75 per year. Individual copies are free.
