Lockerbie Square - Relocation - Indianapolis, Indiana

City: Indianapolis, IN
Category: Relocation

Description: Indianapolis’s oldest surviving neighborhood, Lockerbie Square was made famous in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as the home of Hoosier poet James Whitcomb Riley. It was the city’s first historic district placed in the National Register of Historic Places. The neighborhood takes its name from George Murray Lockerbie, a man from Glasgow, Scotland. The name means “Loki’s Village” in Old Norse. The completely restored neighborhood features a wealth of architectural styles. Located less than half a mile from the very center of Indianapolis, Lockerbie Square seems a world away. Rich in history and charm, the neighborhood has tree-lined cobblestone streets, small homes, wrought iron fences, tiny flower gardens, a few mansions, and a population of about 400. Lockerbie Square is considered one of the best examples of Victorian renovation in the country. It is bounded by Michigan, New York, Davidson, and East Streets.
