Description: For our visitors and new residents who are veterans, this federally owned hospital provides general acute care in addition to a wide range of other services. With 173 beds in its general medical and surgical facility and 100 beds in the nursing-home care unit, the VA Hospital is well prepared to provide patients with quality medical care. Affiliated with the Emory University School of Medicine, the VA Hospital carries on a broad-based research program with more than 73 investigators who participate in research projects focused on AIDS, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, infectious disease, and many other health concerns. The hospital’s Atlanta Rehabilitation Research and Development Center on Aging conducts research to identify the rehabilitative needs of older veterans, especially those with disabilities. Special services include cardiac catheterization, open-heart surgery, and prosthetics programs for veterans with complex amputations. Clinical programs offer substance abuse and post-traumatic stress disorder treatment, gynecology, and gerontology, to name a few.
