Description: This is Atlanta’s first hospital, established in 1880 by the Sisters of Mercy. A private, not-for-profit, 410-bed facility, it counts cardiac care, cancer care, and orthopedic care as three specialty areas. Medical staff includes more than 750 physicians. St. Joseph’s moved from Downtown to its present location on “Pill Hill” in 1978 and has been almost continuously renovating and expanding since then. Well established as a regional referral hospital, Saint Joseph’s provides outreach health care to the medically underserved and working poor through the Mercy Mobile Health Care Program. Saint Joseph’s has scored a number of firsts in cardiac care, among them, the first in the Southeast to perform open-heart surgery. Saint Joseph’s features one of the busiest cardiac catheterization programs in the country; the hospital staff includes a heart transplantation team. Annually it performs more than 2,000 open-heart procedures. Saint Joseph’s is Georgia’s only hospital to have received the Top 50 Hospitals USA designation.The Specialty Center for Cancer Care & Research at Saint Joseph’s houses the Community Clinical Oncology Program, which coordinates nearly 100 clinical trials investigating various therapies for cancer and cancer prevention. The hospital’s orthopedic program provides joint replacement surgery and shoulder and knee reconstruction. The hospital opened the Specialty Center for Wellness & Rehabilitation Care, which provides various rehabilitation services for conditions such as voice and swallowing problems and incontinence. Outpatient hospital services include a breast-health center and surgery. Saint Joseph’s coordinates vascular and gastrointestinal services and has a fully staffed, 24-hour emergency department.
