Description: On a ridge nicknamed “Heartbreak Hill” by the approximately 50,000 runners who pant up it during the annual Peachtree Road Race, Piedmont Hospital sits on historically significant land. It was at this Civil War site that troops from Confederate General William Hardee’s corps unsuccessfully assaulted Union General Joseph Hooker’s corps during the Battle of Peachtree Creek. A stone monument on the property commemorates that struggle. Throughout most of this century, Piedmont Hospital has mirrored the growth of the Buckhead district it calls home. Founded as a 10-bed sanitarium in 1905, Piedmont now has 458 beds for acute care and a 42-bed extended care/skilled nursing care facility on its 26-acre site. More than 3,000 employees and a medical staff of more than 800 physicians offer care in every major category of medicine. Piedmont Hospital offers obstetrics and women’s services at the maternity and women’s center, a breast health center, and a prostate center. The Fuqua Heart Center of Atlanta at Piedmont provides cardiology and cardiovascular surgery services, including open-heart surgery. Piedmont also boasts the Sports Medicine Institute/Reconstructive Joint Center of Atlanta. Injured players from Atlanta’s professional sports teams go to Piedmont for their sports-related medical procedures. At Piedmont’s Neuroscience Institute, neurosurgeons perform gamma knife surgery, a technique that uses sharply focused gamma radiation to treat many brain tumors and vascular malformations without incision. Gamma knife procedures take about half a day, and patients can often resume normal activities the next day. Among its other services, the hospital offers oncology, an inpatient rehabilitation unit, and the Katherine Murphy Riley Outpatient Diagnostic Center. The T. Harvey Mathis Rehabilitation and Fitness Center includes the Piedmont Hospital Health and Fitness Club for employees and members of the community. The hospital’s Level III 24-hour emergency department features a fly-in helipad atop the building. In 1994, Piedmont Medical Center, Inc. became a founding partner of the Promina Health System.
