Grady, a visionary Atlantan who promoted the progressive philosophy of the “New South.” In the heart of Downtown, Grady Memorial functions primarily to meet the health care needs of medically indigent residents of Fulton and DeKalb Counties. The hospital offers emergency care to anyone requiring it. Grady has four emergency centers, including Atlanta’s only and very highly rated Level I trauma center that provides round-the-clock care in surgery, anesthesia, and specialized services such as neurosurgery and obstetrical surgery. Grady’s Georgia Poison Control Center stays open 24 hours a day, staffed by physicians, registered nurses, pharmacists, and certified poison information specialists. The Rape Crisis Center provides a 24-hour hotline, examinations, and medications as well as individual, family, and group counseling. Grady’s Burn Center is one of the nation’s largest. The National Institutes of Health named Grady’s Sickle Cell Center a National Center of Excellence. Grady has also been praised for its TB control and tracking program and for having the most comprehensive HIV/AIDS program in the nation. The hospital also operates a Regional Perinatal Center for high-risk mothers, a Diabetes Detection and Control Center, and a Teen Center with programs to help teens postpone sexual involvement. Grady is affiliated with the Emory University and Morehouse Schools of Medicine. It serves as a major training and research center and offers patients the latest advancements in various medical fields. Twenty-five percent of all doctors practicing medicine in Georgia received some or all of their training at internationally recognized Grady. The Grady Health System comprises many components, among them: five comprehensive community health centers; two women’s and children’s health centers; and a 400,000-square-foot pavilion of outpatient care centers, women’s health services, and the neonatal intensive care nursery. The hospital also operates a 24-hour nurse advice line at (404) 616-0600.
