Description: In March 1904, Wesley Memorial Hospital, Emory Hospital’s predecessor, opened with 50 beds in a downtown Atlanta mansion that Union General William Tecumseh Sherman’s army spared during the Civil War. When the hospital needed bigger quarters in 1922, Coca-Cola founder and philanthropist Asa G. Candler donated a 275-bed facility on the hospital’s current site on the Emory University campus. Today the university-owned, nonprofit institution is a 579-bed adult, tertiary care facility, staffed by 1,093 Emory School of Medicine faculty. It includes a 20-bed psychiatric facility, 102 ICU beds, a 56-bed rehab center, and a 9-bed clinical research center in an NIH-funded Clinical Research Center. The hospital is one of the nation’s largest centers for heart surgery and angioplasty and a referral center of choice for the most difficult cardiac cases. Emory’s innovative Chest Pain Center provides 24-hour care to individuals experiencing symptoms of a heart attack. The center offers immediate access to cardiology experts without a physician’s referral. Emory has a multiple organ and tissue transplantation program that includes heart, heart-lung, lung, heart-kidney, liver, kidney, kidney-pancreas, bone, bone marrow, cornea, and sclera transplantation. The hospital also leads in the neurosciences, especially in the surgical treatment of aneurysms, brain tumors, and movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease. Although it’s considered a general acute-care facility, Emory Hospital doesn’t provide maternity or pediatric services. The hospital is part of Emory Healthcare, which also includes Emory Crawford Long Hospital, the Emory Clinic, and affiliates such as Wesley Woods Geriatric Center. Emory Healthcare also participates in a joint venture with Nashville-based Columbia/HCA to run an additional seven hospitals and five surgery centers in metro Atlanta. Those hospitals are Cartersville Medical Center in Bartow County, Skyland Trail, Eastside Medical Center, Metropolitan Hospital in Atlanta, Northlake Regional Medical Center in Tucker, Parkway Medical Center in Lithia Springs, and Peachtree Regional Hospital in Newnan.
