Description: This north Atlanta multispecialty pediatric center opened in 1915 as a small facility for indigent disabled children. Since then the facility has grown into a premier children’s medical center, equipped to provide general pediatric care as well as advanced subspecialty care. Scottish Rite is strongly committed to children’s health, welfare, and development. Pediatric advocacy programs include the Scottish Rite Child Care Fund, which offers financial aid; the Child Advocacy Center, the only hospital-based center in Georgia for child victims of sexual abuse; “Immunize Georgia’s Little Guys,” a coalition of businesses, organizations, and individuals dedicated to raising the state’s immunization rate for children aged 1 to 24 months; and various community education and parenting programs aimed toward keeping children healthy. Scottish Rite’s 24-hour pediatric emergency/trauma center is staffed with private-practice pediatricians. The center has 24 exam rooms, including two pediatric trauma rooms and two X-ray suites. Two helicopter landing pads and two covered ambulance bays provide direct access for critically injured or ill children. Child-size equipment and an emergency staff trained to minimize pain and fear ensure an atmosphere of compassionate, competent care. The emergency center has a computerized diagnostic system for hard-to-diagnose cases. Specialty areas at Scottish Rite include the Hematology/Oncology Center; the Asthma Education Center; the Pulmonology Function, Sleep Disorder, and Bronchoscopy Laboratories; the Children’s Epilepsy Center; and the Center for Craniofacial Disorders. Scottish Rite also has an extensive orthopedics program and comprehensive inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation units for children recovering from severe head and spinal cord trauma.
