Description: Founded in 1916 as Egleston Children’s Hospital, the 235-bed facility’s top pediatricians treat more than 100,000 children each year at the hospital and neighborhood centers. As a major referral center for the Southeast, the system has several nationally recognized programs, including the AFLAC Cancer Center at Egleston Hospital and the Emory Egleston Children’s Heart Center. The hospital provides comprehensive pediatric care ranging from the diagnosis and treatment of ear infections to that of complex diseases. Egleston physicians also perform heart surgery and organ transplants. As a clinical, teaching, and research institution, the hospital offers all subspecialties in medical care. It enjoys a Level I rating for pediatric trauma care. Egleston excels in several areas, including treatment of cystic fibrosis, care for brain tumors, orthopedics, medical-psychiatry patients, and premature infants. Egleston’s Children’s Advocacy Center disseminates injury prevention messages through billboards, newspapers, magazines, television, and radio. Egleston is headquarters for SAFE KIDS of Georgia, a statewide coalition focusing on injury prevention. Each year more than 500 heart surgeries are performed at Egleston. It is the state’s only pediatric facility to perform a full range of pediatric transplants and kidney dialysis.
