Description: Formerly known as Georgia Baptist Hospital, the facility near Downtown Atlanta was renamed when it was purchased by Tenet Healthcare Corp. of Santa Barbara, California. The medical center has grown over nearly a century to more than 467 beds and approximately 2,500 employees. The facility offers the services of more than 500 physicians. The medical center is affiliated with the Medical College of Georgia and boasts a highly sought-after residency program. The general acute-care institution has several centers of excellence, including heart, cancer, orthopedics, obstetrics, and gynecology. The medical center has a 30-bed neonatal intensive care unit. The cancer center, in the Mary Thompson Way Building at 345 Boulevard, employs a multidisciplinary approach to cancer care. The center supports cancer patients by providing treatment, education, counseling, and research. The medical center offers such highly technical services as laser angioplasty for the treatment of heart disease. The center’s nationally renowned cardiac rehabilitation program offers comprehensive physical, occupational, and speech rehabilitation therapies. Atlanta’s first hospital-based aeromedical service is based at Atlanta Medical. The LifeFlight program transports patients from accident sites and other medical facilities and is fully staffed for extreme emergencies. The medical center has a Level II trauma unit. It also offers free ground transport between the primary care locations and the main campus. Equipped for handicapped patients in wheelchairs, the shuttle operates Monday through Saturday for stable patients who don’t need medical care while in transit. Family members and friends may use the service to visit patients.
