Description: This is the nation’s oldest continuously operating art museum, and certainly among the best of its size. The permanent collection of 19th-century American and French Impressionists and Postimpressionists is inspiring, with delights like the saintlike self-portrait of Vincent van Gogh. There are modern and contemporary paintings, old masters, Hudson River School paintings, and a great collection of American furniture and decorative arts. You’ll see works by Georgia O’Keeffe, Andrew Wyeth, Winslow Homer, Salvador Dali, Andy Warhol, Piet Mondrian, Thomas Cole, Albert Bierstadt, Max Ernst, Claude Monet, Joan Miró, and Auguste Renoir, as well as Connecticut artists like Sol LeWitt, Alexander Calder, William Metcalf, and Jonathan Trumbull. The Wadsworth brings in excellent temporary exhibits as well. Don’t miss Calder’s Stegosauraus stabile sculpture, around the side of the museum in a small park.
