Description: This family-run winery tends more than 350 acres of vines in the Russian River Valley, which it uses for its own wines and sells to other vintners. The winery specializes in Zinfandel—the Jackass Hill variety from the vineyard of the same name is considered by experts to be extraordinarily complex. They also produce a fine Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay, Syrah, and Pinot Noir. The winery is housed in an old hop kiln, just a short hop from U.S. Highway 101 off the River Road exit.

Description: This is a challenging and well-maintained facility—a par 72, 6650-yard championship course—that has hosted the Nike Tour on several occasions. Nontournament green fees are $36 to $56. Twilight (after 2:00 p.m.) rates are several bucks less. A full cart will cost you $28, $10 twilight. Windsor has a restaurant and a snack bar, and golf lessons are available.

Description: Many of the trails in the state parks, state forests, and recreation areas of Wine Country are open to horses, and there are a few outfits that will rent you a steed. Prices begin at approximately $40 per person for a one-hour ride. You provide the cowboy hat and the harmonica.

Description: This center is surrounded by roses—45 varieties, in fact, in a lovely garden. In the artistic category, classes are available in oil and pastel painting and sculpture. Card players have a choice of pinochle or bridge, and seniors can learn to play the guitar, study genealogy, or join in a quilting bee. For the athletic, the bocce ball court is an attraction, as is the horseshoe pit. But most popular of all is the swimming pool: Windsor tends to be hot in summer, and the pool is a terrific place to cool off. It is outfitted for the disabled, who can be lowered from wheelchair to water by a special lift device.
