1. Tom Sawyer’S Mississippi River Rv Park

Description: This lush, green, spacious RV park is on the Arkansas side of the Mississippi, with views of the river from some sites. To get there from Memphis, follow I-55 into Arkansas and take exit 278. Follow the signs, and don’t be alarmed as you zigzag through industrial areas. When you cross the levee, you leave all that behind and go down a country road lined with huge trees. The park has 55 pull-through sites with full hookups (water, electricity, and sewer) for $30 to $36 a night, plus plenty of room for tents. Amenities include a free laundry facility, a bathhouse with showers, fishing in the river or pond, walking trails, and a large field for sports. If you stay six nights, the seventh night is free. Pets are allowed, on leash only. The management is curmudgeonly and strict about the rules.

Description: Crittenden Regional Hospital is a 152-bed facility in Arkansas, about 7 miles from downtown Memphis. It’s a full-service hospital with referral relationships across the river with Tennessee hospitals, and many of Crittenden’s physicians also practice in Memphis. Crittenden has a cardiac-imaging center, providing a service that formerly was routinely referred to Memphis. The hospital is the new home of the University of Tennessee School of Dentistry pediatric-residency program, as well as a medical education center that includes a 75-seat auditorium. The hospital also has a new women’s center that includes six birthing rooms and a high-security 14-bed nursery.

Description: The Evening Times is an afternoon newspaper that publishes Monday through Friday. It covers Crittenden County and eastern Arkansas, with a circulation of around 9,000. The paper’s niche is the collection of small towns in Crittenden County, such as West Memphis, Marion, Crawfordsville, and Earle. The paper also extends its coverage to Hughes, in neighboring St. Francis County. The newspaper is 50 cents a copy on the newsstand and $75 for a year’s subscription.

5. Southland Greyhound Park

Description: Long before the casinos began opening up in Tunica, Memphians have been crossing the bridge into Arkansas to watch the greyhounds race and to indulge in pari-mutuel wagering. Southland has live races every day except Sunday and simulcasting of greyhound races from other tracks daily. You can watch the action trackside or on TV monitors in a clubhouse environment. Southland also has a family-seating area and arcade to accommodate families with kids. The park has an adoption program for its past-prime racers, so don’t be surprised if you occasionally see the sleek greyhounds on leashes around the city. There’s free admission to the park and $1 admission to the clubhouse level.
