I had a former co-worker who was from Moldova but still returned almost every year for a family visit. He grew up there when it was one of the 15 republics of the former USSR. It is the poorest country in Europe, even poorer than Albania from what I know. A high percentage of its own citizens leave to find work in other countries, especially if they have some skills in the right field that can lead to a decent paying job (health care, IT, mechanics etc. When I lived in Germany I encountered a handful of Moldovans in a recent three year period (2020-2023)
The thing about Moldova is the breakaway enclave wants Russia to come to the rescue, and there are some Russian troops there. There are just 200 kilometers (125 miles) of Ukrainian territory between eastern Moldova and the existing battlefield lines in southeastern Ukraine. That alone would make Moldova a less secure place to set up a long term home base as an expat. No doubt one can live there on a very low budget, but cheap places are cheap for a reason.
