Is it 2021 yet? Oh wait...

No seriously though, I hope this is the true last frontier for this project I really can't take another 4-5 years of "preparing".

A bidder has been chosen!

Quote:
Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) announced Wednesday that the state has chosen a team of private companies to build, operate and maintain a light-rail Purple Line in the Washington suburbs for $3.3 billion over 36 years.
Under the chosen agreement — proposed by a team called Purple Line Transit Partners and led by construction giant Fluor Enterprises Inc. — construction would begin in late 2016, and the line would open to service in 2022.

Probably more details than you want to know about the companies involved in the winning bid.

Quote:
The Fluor-led design-build team, Purple Line Transit Constructors, comprises Fluor Enterprises Inc., The Lane Construction Corporation, Traylor Bros., Inc., and includes subcontractor Atkins North America, Inc., as the lead designer. The Purple Line Transit Constructors team will begin design and construction later this year with passenger service scheduled for early 2022. Following the construction, Purple Line Transit Operators, a Fluor-led team comprising Fluor Enterprises, Inc., Alternate Concepts, Inc., and CAF USA, Inc., will provide 30 years of operations and maintenance services.

Great news, but why six years? That seems really long for a 16 mile mostly surface routed line. I thought this could be built in four years.

They've always said 5 years, which I guess it basically is since they're starting end of '16. I assume it all the utility work that takes so long, rather than laying track and building stations.

They probably also allotted time to negotiate with impacted property owners

I thought that was already completed. With construction starting in less than 8 months it's a little late to not have all affected properties accounted for and resolved. Even the large office building in Bethesda has been resolved and well be torn down as a result. Who else would be left at this late stage in the process? Wouldn't those still holding out be in danger of eminent domain or a bare minimum offer?
