General info on Rio Hondo Area (Brownsville, McAllen: school, place to live, prices)

What do you want to know?
Today is supposed to be 75 degrees, later this week supposed to get up to 85 degrees.
It is mostly hispanics down here. For every 10 people, 9 will be hispanic. Cost of housing is cheaper, but we have the same stores, so those store prices remain the same.
Very hot in the summer, but nothing a good AC can't fix.

Sorry it took so long to get back, thanks for your reply..How do y'all fair in the hurricaine situation? Hispanics are no problem as I have also lived in Mexico, another reason I chose the area as prefer going to Mexico for dental. Heat is a non issue.

Other than Walmart what other grocery chains do you have? I assume there are a great selection of produce? Which crossing is best to acess Mexico?

Are you sure you are talking about RIO HONDO and not HONDO? There are two totally different towns.

If it's RIO HONDO, then there are no stores...heck, there's not much of ANYTHING there. Population is like 500. However, it's not too far to travel to the next big town which is named HARLINGEN. You can do all your shopping there and the hospitals are the best in the Valley. There's also a world-class airport that I still consider my favorite due to ease-of-boarding and stressfree check-in. In other words, if you want to fly from there, just check in 1/2hr before the flight leaves and you'll have more than enough time. Parking is nearly curbside. That's how convenient the whole airport is.

About Rio Hondo...I used to spend a lot of time there back in the 90s helping out at a crop dusting strip. Again, there's not much out there. Good place to live if you want a small town atmosphere. There are caucasians there, especially farmers that grow citrus as it's a major citrus/farm area. Also lots of Winter Texans during the winters. It's close to the beach, you just take a backroad. No traffic. Rio Hondo has a nice big school and that's about it. Used to be a famous air museum there that had the USA's largest collection of German fighter aircraft from WWII (non-flying), but sold and shut down in the early 2000s.

Very humid and very hot starting mid Spring - late Fall. Nothing to do there, but people are friendly. Good luck.

Rio Hondo is a nice, small town (around 2000) that is close to Harlingen. There is a really good church there, Rio Hondo Baptist church, that has a lot of community involvement. If you are of the church going type, that would be a great place to meet people.

I'm not sure what grocery store is there, but the main chain is the HEB grocery stores. Yes, good produce to be found at roadside stands. You can cross into Mexico through Brownsville into Matamoros Mexico, about a half hour/45 minutes from Rio Hondo. There is Progreso Mexico near Weslaco, around 30-45mins and also Reynosa Mexico near McAllen Tx, about an hour away. South Padre Island would be 30-45 mins from Rio Hondo.

Thanks for all the info on RIO HONDO, which is the town I am inquiring about... How about the hurricaine situation? Maybe I should have inquired about Harlingen instead of Rio Hondo..And yes small town atmosphere is exactly what I am looking for and of course Great Mexican food, sounds like there should be plenty of that!

Guadalajara? I have traveled from the valley through Reynosa - Monterrey - Saltillo - St Louis Potosi and on into Guadalajara by bus. The road from Reynosa to Monterry is a good one, almost an interstate type road, and then highways - 2 lanes, one each direction - the rest of the way from Monterrey to Guadalajara. Beautiful country!
