I have an elderly aunt who insists there was a hospital near Lakeland, NY, apparently right on, or very near, the lake. She said hospital staffers were known to swim in the lake (not Lake Ontario, but whatever that small lake near Liverpool is named). Does anyone know if this is an accurate recollection? Thanks.

Sorry, no hospitals near Lakeland, NY.

Only four major hospitals in the immediate Syracuse area...

1) Community General on Onondaga Hill

2) Upstate Medical on SU Hill in the city

3) Crouse next to Upstate on the hill in the city

4) and St. Joe's on the northside in the city

I think the OP was referring to a hospital/medical center long since gone :-)

Hmm...I'm putting my thinking cap on about this one as my family has been around the Syracuse area for over 100 years, and I've heard a number of stories over the years. But a hospital on Onondaga Lake is not one of them.

There were resorts along the western shore (Lakeland area) of Onondaga Lake in the 1890's. I'm wondering if one of these might have been considered a "health cure" resort, sometimes TB sanitariums were referred along those lines of a health cure resort during that era. For example there were major TB sanitariums at Saranac Lake in the Adirondacks.I do know that there was a TB sanitarium back in that era way down on the west shore of Skaneateles Lake as there is a history plaque marking the spot.

I'll run this past my 82 yr old mother tomorrow when I visit her at the nursing home. While she is very physically frail, she is quite mentally sharp and this will give her something to ponder.

I ran the hospital past my mother in the nursing home. She does not recall hearing of any hospital in Lakeland. She does not directly recall the resorts on the Onondaga Lake shore, but what her parents and others older told her. BTW: our family originates over 100 yrs ago from the next town over from Lakeland, so it would be reasonably close by.

However, she did give me a couple of people to run this one by, including some people who are active in local historical societies.

I'm somewhat intrigued by this question....
