I've wondered this. It would be nice to cut across to get to Charleston SC from Atlanta or August and avoid going out of route through Columbia.. ..but what do the locals think?

It'd be nice but realistically it'd probably just go to 95 around Walterboro and terminate. A slightly less direct route that works would be a HWY 17 extension to connect to US Route 278 beyond where 17 intersects with I95 since it's basically a straight shot to August and at that point you're on I-20. 17 is already 4 lanes from 95 till you hit West Ashley but there'd be a lot of right of way needed if you wanted to do the same with 278

From a tourism and travel perspective it may be a good idea to get people from Atlanta and points west to Charleston.. but I could see politicos in SC and GA fighting against it.. especially if a state contribution is required. First off, Columbia/Midlands may not want to divert that traffic away from the Metro unless it was already gridlock around the beltway.. which I dont believe it is... Secondly GA already has invested $$ in various highways in between Augusta and Savannah probably to benefit its Port industry followed by tourism. Any direct interstate from the Augusta area to Charleston could be viewed as boosting Charleston over Savannah from a GA perspective.

Looking at Google Maps it's only 3 minutes faster (as of my time right now) going 20 to 95 to Charleston.

It takes 3 minutes longer to go 278/78 to I26 in Orangeburg

This is the route I take going to/from Atlanta.

We can't get the interstates we need without trying to add different ones.

I travel to North Augusta from Charleston often. On most days the fastest route is 26 to 172/Bull Swamp Rd/Caw Caw Hwy through North, Perry, Wagener and on to 20 at exit 33. This is about 10-15 mins faster than going through Columbia and cutting over through West Columbia or by going 78/278.

It would be nice to have alternatives to travel if Interstate 26 or Interstate 95 is shut down for major motor vehicle accidents or if hurricane evacuation routes are needed with incoming Atlantic storms.

Continued population growths and increased traffic in Beaufort, Colleton, and Jasper counties will require transportation enhancement projects. In Jasper County, Bluffton Parkway is proposed to be extended to Interstate 95 south of Exit 5.

It can help them all. Especially if there was a direct highway from Savannah to Charleston to myrtle Beach

Maybe they should make it a toll road to get it built faster too. It won't even need to be an interstate.

You aren't from here, huh? AFAIK, there is one toll road in the state.

Our roads are in woeful condition and the last thing we need is to build a road that probably isn't needed. Myrtle Beach deserves to get major interstate work done given the sheer amount of money it pumps into the state economy.
