I’ve got 2 grandkids who will be going to Clemson in the fall. They will both be coming from the Florence area up 20 and then need to get on 26. Is there anyway they can avoid that awful on/off nightmare? I hate it and I’ve been driving a lot longer then they have. Thanks for any and all ideas.
We make that trip up to Spartanburg every few months. I'm not sure it will appeal to a couple college kids, but after trying several routes, we get off I-20 onto Monticello Rd/Route 215 (one exit before Broad River Road) and follow it up to Jenkinsville, then Routes 213, 174, and 219, to I-26 near Newberry. There are also a couple earlier places to pick up the Interstate. Google Maps says it adds about 15 minutes to our trip, but it's a helluva more relaxed drive, without much traffic.
I think PawleysDude is right. I used to work in downtown Columbia and lived off of St. Andrews, exit 106 off of 26. I had to come through Malfuction Junction every day and never really discovered a way around that mess. Broad River can get really messy real quick.
Going all the way around Columbia to just south of Winnsboro on 34, then various roads back to 26 would work. Keeps you away from all the traffic. Google Maps shows it only adds 25 minutes.
Just a suggestion though. Why not travel at low traffic volume times? I'm no fan of malfunction junction, but once you've driven it a couple of times it isn't so bad.
Oh my! I thought I was just a "weenie" driver. That exit (north and south) is a dangerous nightmare. I have been going to Wilmington, NC from Upstate SC (and back) that way several times a year for many years to visit family and it makes me so nervous every time.
Thank you to those that posted alternative routes. Definitely worth a try!
I know this is an old thread but I’m from Florence and use to go to School in the Upstate, so I’m very familiar with that exit onto 26, after being stuck in many traffic jams and dealing with the people driving like a bat out of hell. I would suggest backroads, Broad river to 26 or Hwy 9 all the way to the Upstate.
