Now not only am I trying not to hit the snout butterflies which seem to have returned, but fuzzy caterpillars are crossing the road as well!

I was coming back from Fair Oakes Ranch a little while ago and started seeing them. I hate running them over if I can avoid it, but after a quick run to McDonald's a minute ago they're out in mass!

Anyone know specifically what kind of caterpillars they are, and how long they're gonna be around?!?

Cheers! M2

Those? According to google, they are called woolly bear caterpillars, and the turn into Moths, not butterfly's.

Lol!! They drive me crazy on wiseman. Get so thick there is no way to avoid all of them. I just drive saying, sorry, sorry! There here every year about this time. Not sure how long they stick around but seems like forever.

Me007gold, not sure if that's them, I don't get an up-close look at them from where I sit in the Jeep. It could be, I just don't know.

And I wasn't saying they are the ones that become moths, it's just that we have had the snout butterflies here for a few weeks now; and they go away for a little bit then re-appear. They were out today for some reason, and now I have both them and these little fuzzy caterpillars to try to avoid.

Camper1, I feel the same way, and am surprised I haven't been pulled over by the police for weaving all over my lane. It will be a bit embarrassing to explain to the officer that it was an attempt to not run over a caterpillar!

Cheers! M2

That's what we always understood them to be called. Hubby discovered them first. I never even noticed them but once you do, you see them everywhere on the roads.

Default Woolly Worms

Banner Elk, NC has a Woolly Worm Festival every fall. You can buy yourself a woolly worm and have it compete in a race up a string. Some people believe the brown band is an indication of how long and how cold the winter will be.
