Hi everyone,

I'm thinking of moving to Richmond for personal reasons and commuting to my job in Charlottesville every weekday.

Has anyone done this before? How much do you think it will cost me in terms of rent and transportation if I live in western Richmond near the University of Richmond? Are there other people who do this?

I'm sure other people do this. I think there was a recent thread about this too. That is a pretty long commute though. I think it's about 60 miles to Short Pump from eastern Charlottesville, so at least an hour. I commute to C-ville from Staunton and with gas prices the way they are I spend about $200 a month just in fuel, and my commute is 40 miles one way. Hence why I'm moving to Charlottesville among other reasons. Your fuel tab will be more I assume, depending on the kind of car you drive. As far as rents go, I think Richmond and C-ville's are comparable. Richmond varies much more though depending on what neighborhood or street you're on.

I did it for awhile and it wasn't bad. Sometimes I even miss having that hour in the morning to myself. From Nuckols and 295 it was 57 miles and took about an hour. The drive is pretty straight, traffic is light and the view of the Blue Ridge in the morning is beautiful. But it is an hour ride no matter how you slice it and I found having Sirius Radio and a large cup of coffee a big help to staying alert along the road.
