I watched it. John Oliver talks about a South Carolina nursing home where one of the residents was eaten by an alligator. I don't think he understands alligators and the deep south. Every pond is an alligator pond, including swimming pools. Even indoor pools are not exempt, if the alligator finds its way inside. And while we may view ourselves as being created in God's image, alligators view us as another food source.
Of course most people do not want to end up in nursing homes. He does touch upon the lost income of family members who stay home as caregivers. He mentions hiring caregivers to provide in-home care. This is simply not cost-effective; the 5 shifts required for 24/7 care is far more expensive than a nursing home.
After dad died, we had to move mom into assisted living due to dementia. She was not happy about it, but thankfully came to terms with it. By the time she was moved to memory care, I don't think she noticed the difference. We had few complaints about her care. The assumption is that the resident will spend all of their assets, and then go on Medicaid. I suspect that the number of residents who are able to pay for 6 years of care like mom did is small.
For example, billing for providing 45 minutes of occupational therapy to a 92 y/o with a terminal illness.
Occupational therapy doesn't mean what you think it means. It pertains to providing therapy to enable people to perform the normal ADLs, such as walking, dressing oneself, eating, etc.
Contrary to your italicized indignation, there is absolutely nothing wrong or unusual with a 92-year-old being given occupational therapy.
Once again, a John Oliver show totally outraged me.
I truly believe that the only way I would ever be placed in a nursing home would be if I was in absolutely no condition to protest. I truly would rather die.

It does not work out to be our choice .
My dad woke up one day and had a paralyzing stroke, couldnt speak and had no idea who anyone was ...he required 24/7 nursing home care ...he lived that way for over 5 years

True. Occupational therapy = small motor skills, physical therapy = gross motor skills.
