Why Are There Nearly Four Times AS Many Mentions of Hell As There Are Heaven? (paradise, bible)

In the new testament there are 162 mentions of gehana, sheol, hell etc. and about 1/4 that many of heaven, paradise etc. Were they trying to tell us something about reward vs punishment?

Perhaps one might think that heaven is not worth the effort of trying to obtain the pass - mark in the somewhat obscure entry examination to Pearlyland. But they sure might want to avoid Hell.
Religiously speaking, stick is more effective than carrot.

If there IS a hereafter I will have a helluva time renewing old acquaintances
Given that we cannot have an idea what a hereafter might be like, and that the evidence for voices from the other side is no more convincing than evidence for gods, there might, for all we know be a place where we can, as you say, renew old acquaintances.
I just say that I don't see why it should be an 'invitation only' party for a god that only gives tickets to his fans.
And I'd also just say that I have renewed some old acaquaintances and frankly I'm finding you people more interesting to talk to - theist and unthiest alike.

I've booked a table right near the stage in 'Hell'.. Damn, there's going to be some cracking concerts there. Just think of all the hell raisin' musicians that would have ended up there!
I think the writers of the Bible were trying to scare anyone who'd even think of rejecting Christianity. It's much easier to keep people in line with threats of hell. It's a very useful tool; one that's still used today for all sorts of things.

Because humankind evolved to be more aware of danger than pleasure, on account of the fact they were living in a world that was far more dangerous than pleasurable.
Creating fear of hell is the bigger "bang for the buck" if you will.

It could be that God tried to warn us of the greater danger. Heaven would not be something one would worry about. Hell would be, and thus. The warning was given with increased frequency. And not to forget, many NDEs seem to reveal that such a place does exist. And often we see how such NDEs of Hell, make even the most hardened athiests, suddenly become Christians.
