Every once in a while I go to Church and enjoy watching the people. I like to go to the big mega churches and or the ones where people are very committed to God and the Christan lifestyle. While I am not religious myself I do notice people who are very active in the Church do seem happier and more adjusted to life. They seem like they have:
A nice social network from the church
A sense of inner peace and direction
A standard of decency and order.
Are more concerned with dressing well and paying attention to their appearance
Do you think active involvement in religion is good for the average person?

I Have to Ask.................
Since you say you attend church occasionally and have listed some things you consider good about religion what do you see as the points that make you a not-religious person?
There are "well adjusted" people who are religious and non-religious. There are also some supremely ****ed up religious and non-religious people. I guess my point is, religion is has a net neutral effect on society. It's good for some people. For others, it's not.

Yes, I think it is good for the average person. It can be disasterous, though, and I think 3 of the reasons you named are bad reasons to go to church, and are not things to base your faith on.
Studies have shown that people who go to Church on a regular basis and consider themselves religious are happier and are less likely to suffer from a variety of social ills like:

I think the things you listed above can be found at the county club, NOT reasons to go to church.
I think active involvement in GOD is good for the everyone.
I am so sick of people saying that just because you belong to a certain church and have the same morals and values as other people there you somehow don't have a mind of your own.
I agree that it works for many and it helps to give many a direction in there life they might otherwise be lacking. You don't have to belong to a religion though to be spiritual. I think being spiritual and having a relationship with God is what helps people be well rounded the most.
Religion usually refers to dogma based programs which can be very non spiritual. It think that religious people usually are missing chunks of themselves, they look for the missing chunks in "god" .
The idea that one needs a relationship with god to be a whole, happy and well adjusted person is not viable.
Being religious has no more inherent good than being a Rotarian.
Being spiritual on the on the other hand, is different. Finding the world around you a holy place makes sense.
Christianity and Islam and Judaism bug me, cause they are essentially anatural.
