Sorry if this is the wrong forum but I figured some would know here.

Is the NC vehicle tax bill deductible under the personal property tax? For that tax, it is deductible if it is a state or local tax that is:

charged on personal property
Based only on the value of the property, and
Charged on a yearly basis

Since I know I will get the inevitable "ask your CPA", I will be having a CPA do these. I'm just one of those sick people that enjoys doing taxes and likes to check up on their CPA-

Thanks in advance!

Your car tax bill is broken into two parts: the tax based on the value of the car and the $15 (?) road fee or whatever it is. I believe that the tax part is deductible while the flat fee part is not.

Yeah only part of it is deductible, the part that is based on your vehicle. There is a 25 $ fee that is not deductible.

How can I get a receipt of how much we paid in property taxes for our car last year?

Well they mailed you a bill so I think that could be used as a receipt.

Otherwise you could look it up online, it says what you owed and when it was paid (this is wake county, not sure where you are)

If you need more than that I guess you would have to call the tax office for your county?

I live in Durham county. The problem is that my car is a lease so the leasing company pays the tax and then they bill me. I looked online and it's not listed (my wife's car, which we own outright, is).

So, I went online and looked at my past statements and I found the one from September where they charged me for Property Tax. I printed the October statement (that shows that I paid it in September) and I'll use that for my tax records.

Thanks guys!
