I moved here about 6 months ago and I'm looking for a doctor who will prescribe phentermine (weight loss stimulant rx). Anyone know of one who will prescribe it? I'd prefer someone in Arlington or Fairfax counties, but anywhere in DMV will do.

Thanks!

Considering it is a legal drug, why wouldn't all MDs prescribe it, if necessary?

Try Dr. James Michael Anchors in Rockville. It's just a short hop from NoVa. One thing though, if you are noncompliant with your follow ups, he will cut you loose in a flash. He has written books, been on television, and been in front of the Board speaking about the wonderful results he has had with phen-pro. He takes it seriously enough that he only sees bariatric patients now. He used to be my internal medicine doctor when I lived in Maryland. The man is a genius.

Believe it or not, there are plenty of doctors in the DC area who are, um, 'weird' about prescribing certain legal Rx drugs - or (on the dental end of things) administering nitrous oxide if they're filling a cavity or performing other painful dental work (I can't imagine that they honestly believe someone would intentionally let themselves develop a cavity in order to feel 'high' for thirty minutes)...

This was something that really took me aback when I first moved here.

Well, Nitrous Oxide has the potential for risk of reproductive, hematological, and nervous system effects for those who are administering it. I can see being "weird" and recommending a different sedation or numbing method that didn't have side effects to the administrator. I'd want to protect myself and my employees, too.

It is an amphetamine which hops up your metabolism. I think many docs prefer less risky methods for weight loss.

There's a small chain around called something like My Weight Loss Dr that advertises that they prescribe weight loss medication, which I assume is phentermine. One clinic is in Herndon if you have trouble finding a hook from which to google it, but there are others. I wouldn't look too closely at the doctors' resumes, or use them as your PCPs, if all you want is this medication, but they're there. However, you may have to subscribe to their entire plan rather than just get an rx.
