MADDOCK, N.D. (AP) — A woman walked into a North Dakota bar carrying a raccoon, leading health officials to warn those who had contact with the animal about possible rabies exposure.

Bartender Cindy Smith said she was serving drinks at the Maddock Bar last week when a local resident brought in the animal during happy hour. There were about 10 people in the saloon at the time, she said.

The article also said no one reported being bitten or even nipped. Unless someone was bitten or an actively rabid animal slobbered all over their face (think mucous membranes) or licked/clawed some open sore they happened to have, the chance anyone in that bar was at risk for rabies was very low. Besides, there's an oral rabies vaccine for racoons. F&G and some health departments have even been broadcasting it in baits in multiple states trying to control rabies in wildlife; notably raccoons and skunks. If this was a responsibly managed pet raccoon it might even have been vaccinated. But this woman was obviously an idiot, so we can't assume she knew or bothered to protect her attention-grabbing pet against any infectious disease.

What Parnassia said. That article is nothing but fear mongering. You don't get rabies just because a raccoon sat next to you.
