Thinking of moving upstate, preferably Monroe/Harriman area.
I work in the Bronx, but have grown tired of city living. I just want some space in my everyday-living along with a more peaceful atmosphere.
I have a pretty good paying city job in the BX so I’d have to commute. But I’m up for it if it’s worth it.

I’m a single, African American 30 year old woman. How is racism? I’ve heard of the kiras Joel problems, but is it possible to still manage to have a better quality of life?

Just looking for a little insight, and I’m opened to all forms of advice.
TIA! ❤️

I would look to the east side of the Hudson for a better commute to the Bronx. Patterson and Pawling are nice areas for single family homes. The area is not diverse and neither is Monroe and Harriman.

I’m not sure about racism in the area, but the black population in the Monroe-Woodbury SD has historically been solidly middle class: Monroe-Woodbury Central School District Historical Median Household Income by Races Data - USA.com™

In that school district, Harriman has a pretty big black population: https://censusreporter.org/profiles/...5-harriman-ny/

From the US Census website: https://data.census.gov/cedsci/profi...00000US3632325

Some historical economic information for the village: Harriman, NY Historical Median Household Income by Races Data - USA.com™

According to 2019 US Census 5 year information, the black median household income for the village is $91,250 and the black poverty rate for that period in the village is 1.2%. This is from the same source above.

So, as you can see that it is a smaller community with a quite substantial and middle class black population that may be an option for you in that area.

On the east side of the river, I was thinking maybe Fishkill around Beacon, where you could take a train into work.

Hope this helps and gives you idea of where to look.

Someone posted a question similar to this in January. I happened to give my opinion.

Thank you so much for that info!

Beacon you say, huh?
I googled at it said it would take me 2hrs by public transportation.
What train would take me to the BX?

The Hudson Line, but I believe it would be similar from Monroe. Ironically, Harriman has a rail station and likely plays a part in the growth of a black middle class there: https://new.mta.info/map/5351

So, this may be a matter of looking strategically near a train station.
