We will be spending a week in the Myrtle Beach area in mid-March. Our group includes two 50'ish parents, our two sons (ages 21 and 19) and the girlfriend of our older son (also 21). We've got a large condo reserved - now need some ideas of what to do. I expect it will be a bit too cool for beach activities, but it will be much warmer than Kansas in March so we'll be happy to get what we get.
Our older son and his girlfriend enjoy gardens and nature walks. My husband and I hope to see some old plantation type places. The younger son likes a variety of activities, but gets bored easily. I think we'd like to get down to Charleston for a day, but will only have time for the highlights there. I know we'll split up some, because some prefer shopping while others hate it.
You absolutely have to visit Brookgreen Gardens, south of the MB area. Absolutely the finest garden and outdoor sculpture collection you'll find. I'm sure they have a website.
It's a former plantation (the main old house is gone). Has a rich 20th century history as the property of Archer Huntington, who is said to have entertained Nazi sub officers there and at his beach house (called Atalayah, at Huntington Beach State Park, across the highway from Brookgreen). His wife was a great sculptor. Many of her works are in the collection.
From your description of your interests, you can't afford to miss this.
Lots of good stuff in Charleston too (but no gardens as fine as Brookgreen). The best thing to do in Charleston is to walk the old neighborhoods in the old part of town. People still live in them. (very wealthy people).
