66 years ago today, we tragically lost 26 children and a school bus driver in Floyd County. My elderly mother was there and vividly remembers this horrific event. An award-winning documentary film was produced, "Just The Worst Thing". Here are portions of live radio coverage on that sad day:

Ky had another bus crash accident where 27 people died, the same # as Prestonburg. 5/14/88 Carrolton Ky. I-71. Mostly kids heading to Kings Island. DWI dude in a pick up hit the bus head on and it caught fire. Was the deadliest DWI accident in US history, probably still is.

Victims of that wreck came from this area. There is a bus permanently parked in a local restaurant’s lot that is similar to the bus that was crashed and is decorated with the pictures of all the victims. It is incredibly sad. One of the things most people don’t talk about is the survivors’ guilt of most of the people who survived the wreck. The daughter of a former coworker of my husband was supposed to be on the trip but was grounded for getting in trouble at school but her other child was badly burned in it. Neither girl has ever gotten over it. One poor guy lost his entire family in it.

The drunk driver who caused it is out of prison but apparently lives isolated away from society, essentially in a jail of his own making.
