Hey All! Does anyone know the local law/ordinance of parking and living in an RV in the driveway of a residential property? St. Charles address. Towards South Elgin and Campton Hills. So unincorporated St. Charles?

Thanks!

I know Cousin Eddie did that once during the Christmas holidays in a Chicago suburb.

After a couple days I think you're forced to move it down by the river.

I looked up the City of St. Charles website to see if there was any information regarding zoning or other local ordinances related to simply parking an RV in the driveway for storage purposes and nothing is posted. That said, you might call them and ask about 'storing' an RV in the driveway.

If the house is located in an HOA, forget it. If no HOA and other neighbors have boats and RVs parked in their driveways, you might get away with it for a while.

Typical zoning laws require the front of the RV or boat to be behind or even with the front of the house, meaning beside the house or in the backyard, with additional setback requirements, usually ten feet from the property line. Even in areas where these are the zoning laws, they are not always enforced. Someone might store a boat in front of their garage door for years and then someone moves to the neighborhood and reports it, then the owner of the house with the boat is told they have a few days to move the boat or else pay a fine.

Typically with RVs, no one can live in it beyond three or four days. This allows for Cousin Eddie to visit for the weekend, or if you own the RV you can use it as a guest house for limited periods of time. I have seen RVs besides people's houses (not in St. Charles) with skirting around the bottom and lights on inside every night, where it is obvious that someone was living there for several years, so it may be possible for you to pull off.

As the owner of a vintage travel trailer, which I store in my backyard, I speak from personal experience.
