This is my very first successful carry over caladium from a previous year. In our Growth Zone 7, the tubers must be dug up before the first freeze. I always get lazy. Except, I kept the tubers for this plant in a dry place, and in January planted them in pots of Miracle Gro, kept them moist, and set them in a sunny window. Miraculously, results were great. I just set this pot outside and am thrilled! Have you had success with potting caladium tubers?

Wow, very impressive! When I visit my daughter in zone 7 I often help her plant the caladiums. She and I are lazy gardeners and never winter the tubers over but you had great success. What a show they put on!
I once tried to over winter an Elephant Ear. I fell for it hook line and sinker, I bought sulfur dust, lifted them, dried them after rinsing the excess dirt off them, dusted and wrapped them and the were soft and yucky in the spring. Moral of the story......the sulfur dust cost more than the Elephant Ear bulb did.
We're in zone 10 so we just stick 'em in the ground and forget them year after year. If you do fail overwintering them though, they're cheap enough to buy each year and really lovely plants.
10 Weeks Later...Here's the caladium shown in my first post
This caladium has enjoyed my front porch for 10 weeks, and sure looks happy! Seems it's not quite as pink as it was...maybe the lighting. Next year....I'll pot these up again. The sky's the limit! This will be a caladium porch! (I always over do it! )
I love caladium. You have inspired me to try them next year. I can keep them in the garage over the winter. They have so many color combinations and even different kinds of beautiful leaves and if they over winter well they are a good buy.
