Because they love us. I am a god to my dogs. I provide them everything they need and rub their bellies. I give them treats and take care of them when they are ill. I let them sleep in my bed and talk to them. Whats not to love......
Because she teaches me how to love without having to say a word. I am in tune to her needs and she knows me better than I know myself. I know when I've over-stepped my boundaries just by the way she looks at me. Now that she's getting older, she's showing me how I'm going to take care of my parents when they can no longer care for themselves and how I hope my kids will take care of me someday.
Our dogs love unconditionally which gives us space to heal from hurts caused by humans and a chance to be kind without being judged.
I like how they aren't people- they're not self-conscious, they scratch themselves in front of you, every day they do something that strikes me as funny. Dog energy is neat energy. I wouldn't say they love me- it depends on the dog- but I love them, and learn to love each one. They make me less lonely and isolated-feeling.
for us it is: his personality for starters, but more than that he gives unconditional love and is totally dependent on us, plus totally loyal and usually very easy to please. They don't talk back, well, not much anyway, they are not demanding, well not much anyway and they can even keep us warm in bed at night.
He makes me laugh, he's dependent on me and trusting, innocent (well, except the part about sneaking food off the table) and so easy to please. Also snuggly and inquisitive. He does talk back under his breath, but that also makes me laugh.
Individually, we all have amazing and profound stories and perspectives. But I am also deeply fascinated at the closeness between our two species in general. The more I read, and observe, the more I've become convinced that we are symbiotic and have been since dogs domesticated us some 35,000 years ago, or more. We changed some wolves into dogs, but they in turn changed us, our style of hunting, and maybe even our family dynamics. And they made it easier for us to travel and migrate. Dogs "read" us as part of their instinct, they are the only other species which understands "pointing," and apparently even children who don't have dogs at home understand the meaning of different dog barks. We've evolved together.
Of course some people don't relate to dogs, and some dogs don't like people. I didn't grow up with dogs, I was terrified of them until I got First Dog--in my forties! Better late than never...what a privilege it is to learn to speak Dog. A whole new world of communication opens up. That has to part of our emotional attachment--we bond because we "get" each other.
👀 They love us unconditionally, their bond is "til death do us part," they love us even when WE are not so lovable...
We were created for relationship and we seek out companionship. If we don't get along with people, we get a dog. (You are in the dog forum, that is why I did not go with cat, lizard, snake or fish...HA!)
We can spoil them rotten but they will never act like spoiled brats.
