I have a two year old Chihuahua who is very shy/reclusive. His name is Paco. I bought a Chi pup a little over a month ago thinking it would help my older Chi to be less shy, his name is Chico.

Boy was I wrong. The dogs are like night and day. Chico is very playful, hyper, bites a lot. Paco is the typical Chi...afraid of everything and yappy. Chico wants to be buds with Paco, Paco's not interested. Chico will only eat/drink if he can do it from Paco's bowl. Paco won't eat if Chico has touched his bowl. I have found it's best to just keep them apart because Chico annoys the life out of Paco...chasing him around, biting his tail, jumping on his back. Even when Paco growls and nips at Chico, Chico still won't quit. Is it possible to "make" the dogs at least tolerate each other? How can I get Chico to calm down around Paco?

Maybe one at a time these 2 dogs need to meet other pets. The puppy needs to respect the first dog. Get a crate, and yes keep them apart. I lost a beloved terrier, and had a bichon age 7. I worked and had the very bright idear, to get a puppy she was 5 months when I got her. My thought was to keep the older one company, and she would teach it potty. Boy was I wrong. She wanted nothing to do with the pest. She liked the puppy, it was just way too much. I ended up bringing the puppy to doggie day care. That way I was happy, the older dog, and puppy. when the puppy got older they were friends.
the same did happen when the Bichon was 8 weeks and the terrier 3. the Bichon found a tug of war, and did follow the terrier all around. they soon did become best of friends. then I got a kitten from the pet shelter, the bichon, and kitten were friends. the terrier gave me a look! she just did ignore the kitten. and the bichon, and kitten wanted to play tug of war. it all will work out in time.
