I am an 81 year old widower in reasonable health (COPD), financially secure, and living on my own in a small patio home whose HOA does all external maintenance. I am considering the next phase of my life. While I do not need assisted living, I would like to get into an environment where while still living independently, I can call on services such as meals, house cleaning, social activities, etc. and when needed the ability to move on to more dependent living as might be required in the future.
Ideas and suggestions welcome, especially any in the central SC area,
Check out Covenant Place in Sumter. It had a range of living arrangements, from independent to assisted living. It’s been a decade since I’ve been there, but it was very nice and highly regarded when it opened and I know people moved there from other other parts of the state because it was a desirable place to be. On-site dining and social events too.

How many bedrooms for if/when direct care is required over-nighting or more ?
Until then ... you may need to hire a grown daughter for that eventual role...
and to do other more basic things on a 1x or 2x an week basis.
I think there are facilities here in Alabama that still take you from independent living through skilled nursing care/memory care. After several years as a resident of one such facility, my father went straight to the hospital to die. Until then he had laundry and house keeping service as well as two excellent meals each day. He was very pleased with his decision; his children were very pleased with his decision. I think you may find such places in South Carolina.
Still Hopes in West Columbia is the best in the area according to our friends. They accommodate every stage elderly people encounter from independent living to skilled nursing care all on the same (growing) campus. We have attended several functions there and have been impressed with the staff and facilities.
Hopefully the op has found a place by now, but I'm going to add my 2 cents here. I'm "only" 72 and will be moving to Columbia soon. By my count there are 21 senior apartments in Columbia that are not assisted living.
Some of these are for low to modest incomes, a few are pretty darned expensive, but there's a nice selection across the board. I just googled "senior apartments in Columbia, SC", and from there you could get their addresses, phone numbers, monthly rents, their reviews and how safe the areas were. On most I plugged in "directions to" and rode around on the streets on google maps to get a look at things.
I'm not sure how good public transportation will be, but from the Comet website it appears that if I'm in the right areas it will work. Crime is a concern, so I'll probably end up taking it where I'm going and Uber back to avoid standing around at a bus stop late at night.
