Help!

My husband and I live in San Francisco but we are planning to move back east to be closer to family. My family is in NYC and his is in DC. We hope to geographically speaking - find a middle ground. We need to live within an hour of a major city/airport. We also love the outdoors and would prefer a place with a bit of culture. Any suggestions?

We LOVE San Francisco so we are hoping to find another place to live with it all... ocean, mountains, culture, work/life balance...

Thanks in advance.

Philadelphia came to mind immediately for me, too. Convenient to both, lots of culture, lots of nice neighborhoods, urban, walkable, by the water, lots of nice outdoors activities within easy reach.

Do you have any more details or restrictions (budget, jobs, amenities, schools, etc.)? Also, did you live in the City or did you live elsewhere in the Bay Area?

Places like Princeton and New Brunswick/Piscataway in NJ could be considered too.

Greater New York. DC is really close. Going from NY to DC is like driving from here to Tahoe-only no steep mountains. Plus they have trains between NY and DC all day long.

New York, New York--everything. Mountains can be forgiven for all the things you get besides Mountains.

However, DC is no slouch at all. You really have 2 fantastic world cities to choose from-all depends on your taste.

I agree with 18Montclair. Go with the NYC area and you can drive to DC to visit your husband's family. I always make the drive to NYC - spend about 8 hours in NYC - and come back to DC in the same day. There are a lot of bus service between NYC and DC that runs pretty regular all day. Another option is the Amtrak Acela - I think it takes 2 hours and 50 minutes because the train averages around 80 miles per hour.
