I expect to be moving to Austin this year. Does anyone know of a senior (50s or 60s+) softball scene in the area? This is a really important feature for me when considering where to live. I love what I have seen of Austin in visiting there, with it's vibrant music scene, and progressive social/political/cultural atmosphere, and the incredible Whole Foods market. PLEASE have a group of senior softball players.

My hubby plays softball with a bunch of guys and some are senior...and some are young...some of the old guys are in great shape...some of the young guys are in terrible shape. The city of Austin recreational softball leagues are great and play from late Feb to end of November (about there). I don't know if they have specific leagues for seniors, but if you're fairly fit (believe me, there are tons of guys out there who aren't even close!) and enjoy playing, then you should fit right in and you'll meet new people of all ages. If you can't find a team to start with, you can troll the games and there are always teams that need pick up players. They play just about every night of the week.

Wow, that's great. Thanks so much, MJ. I will definitely keep this in mind, and may follow up with you and hubby for more on locations, etc. Thanks for the prompt response.

Hello again, MJinAustin

I appreciate your initial response to my question. Now I will be coming to Austin July 1, and will be staying most of the month searching for a relocation home. While there, I would like to check out the softball scene (slo-pitch). Can you give me any more details as to where I might look, e.g., ballfield locations, days and times, etc. I would rate myself at a fairly competitive level. Thanks in advance for any leads you can give me. If anyone else can help, I would appreciate that also.

Wanderin' Will

Default More info, please

Looking for mjinaustin, or anyone else who can help, please, and thank you.

I am now in Austin, and have been checking out the Kreig softball complex for the last 4 evenings, including this evening. I haven't yet seen any seniors out there to play. Is this a bad time of year? Is it weather related? Is it the 4th of July holiday? Am I looking at the wrong hour (@6-6:30 pm)? Help!

Hey Will,

The A Division only plays on Sunday evenings...I don't remember when the B Division plays...

oh...but the wonders of the internets...

The Austin Senior Softball League, under the auspices of the Parks and Recreation Department (PARD), has two divisions.

The A-Division is for men 50 years of age and over and plays at a reasonably competitive level. The B-Division is for players 55 and over who may have physical limitations or just want to play at a lower competitive level. Players may play in both divisions.

New players can be assigned to teams in either or both divisions at any time during the year.

The A-Division plays on Sundays, starting at 6:00pm at Krieg Field #3. It currently consists of eight teams. A-Division teams pay the standard PARD registration fee.

The B-Division plays on Mondays and Thursdays during the day, starting at 1:30pm in the spring and fall and at 9:00am in the summer on Krieg Field #7. It currently consists of four teams. Because many of the B-Division players are retired and are living on a fixed income, PARD has instituted a fee structure that makes playing in the B-Division very reasonable.

The Krieg Field Complex is located on S. Pleasant Valley Road, adjacent to the Longhorn Dam on the south bank of the Colorado River. Krieg Field # 7 is the one closest to the dam, and Krieg Field #3 is across the driveway from Krieg #2 (where the restrooms are located).

For more information, prospective players may contact the following:
Chairman:
Terry Watts

tnswatts2@verizon.net

For A-Division, Stephen Kreger: 832-1697 or tark427@hotmail.com

For B-Division, Keith Schnell: 261-0333 or keithschnell@sbcglobal.net

Hope this helps...

Default Gracias

Thanks again Jeff. Mjinaustin left me with the impression that there were oportunities to play just about every evening. I'll check out the A and B division contacts for more info. I was hoping that there would be opportunities for anyone, without requisite preregistration.
